LeBron James says he has 5–7 more years left — Lakers teammate thinks he could play until 50

Just days after a cryptic video stirred talk of a farewell tour, LeBron James’ future took another twist. This time, with fresh comments from both the 40-year-old superstar and his rising teammate Dalton Knecht.

According to TMZ, Knecht told reporters:

“LeBron James said he can play another five or 10 years. So Bron and I could stick with the team for another five or 10 years. Why not?”

It’s a bold endorsement from the 24-year-old shooting guard, who nearly got dealt at the deadline in a failed trade involving Charlotte’s Mark Williams. But more importantly, it echoes what LeBron himself said earlier this year.

LeBron in January: “Five or Seven More Years”

Back in January 2025, LeBron made headlines when he declared:

“I think I have five or seven more years left at the highest level.”

That quote resurfaced quickly after his recent social media video, which led fans and media to speculate that his 23rd season, matching his jersey number, could be his last.

Still Producing at 40

LeBron’s continued production suggests the window may not be closing anytime soon. His 2024–25 stats were among the best for any player his age or in NBA history:

Kobe Bryant (2000)
Tony Parker (2003)
LeBron James (2007)
Kawhi Leonard (2014)
Bennedict Mathurin (Wednesday)

Those numbers earned him Second Team All-NBA honors, and he continued extending league records in scoring milestones and All-NBA selections.

Retirement or Reinvention?

As LeBron prepares to enter the final year of his contract and turns 41 next season, the league is torn between two narratives:

The Lakers’ early playoff exit, despite the blockbuster Luka Dončić trade, may influence how James approaches the final stretch of his career. So could offseason roster upgrades and any future decisions involving Bronny James.

Could LeBron Really Play Until 50?

While it may sound far-fetched, LeBron has already played more seasons than any player in league history and continues to defy expectations. With players like Tom Brady extending elite careers into their mid-40s in other sports, Knecht’s comment about LeBron playing until age 50 doesn’t sound entirely unrealistic.

For now, the only certainty is that LeBron isn’t done. And how long he stays might just be up to him.
